A Summary Analysis of the Java Job Market in Poland

July 18, 2023

The world of tech hiring has always been fast-paced and unpredictable. Over the last six months, we’ve observed particular turbulence in this sector, especially in Poland. After witnessing two years of higher-than-average demand for talent, we have recently plunged into relatively lower demand. This sudden shift in the job market landscape has significantly impacted job seekers and recruiters alike.

Java, one of the historically most popular programming languages and software platforms, has also experienced this shift. We’ve conducted an in-depth study to shed light on the changing dynamics of the Java job market in Poland. This article presents our findings and offers insights for businesses seeking Java talent and developers looking for promising opportunities.

Understanding the Talent Pool

The Java developer community in Poland is robust, consisting of around 95,000 developers. However, the dynamics of this talent pool are continuously changing. Over the past year alone, we have seen an influx of approximately 11,000 developers, adding to this pool. Regarding gender distribution, it is predominantly male at 84%, with women making up the remaining 16%.

Open to new possibilities, a substantial portion of this pool, approximately 21,000 developers, is actively seeking new opportunities. A notable characteristic of this pool is the average length of service, which stands at 1.7 years. This number reflects a healthy cycle of learning, growth, and transition in a continually evolving tech landscape.

However, as mentioned, the demand for Java talent is experiencing a slight downturn. We see around 4,880 open positions for Java roles, with new openings reducing by about 15% this month alone.

Geographical Distribution of Opportunities

When it comes to finding Java talent, certain cities show a higher supply compared to demand. These cities include:

  1. Gdansk
  2. Poznan
  3. Lodz

On the flip side, cities with the highest demand for Java talent are:

  1. Warsaw
  2. Krakow
  3. Wroclaw

Corporate Impact on the Talent Pool

Another crucial aspect to consider is the influence of specific corporations on the talent pool. The top five companies with the most prominent talent pools are:

  1. Epam: 1617 developers (-3% annual loss)
  2. Capgemini: 1264 developers (0% annual growth)
  3. Comarch: 1154 developers (-7% annual loss)
  4. Sii: 940 developers (+2 % annual growth)
  5. Nokia: 654 developers (-4% annual loss)

Conversely, the companies that have seen the most rapid growth within this talent pool over the past year are:

  1. Xebia (+59%, primarily due to their acquisition of PGS Software)
  2. Box (+54%)
  3. Exadel (+33%)
  4. Google (+25%)
  5. Procter & Gamble (+24%)

Impactful Trends and Predictions

Despite the recent slump in demand, the need for Java developers remains high. However, there’s been a significant drop compared with the scenario ten months ago. This shift has led to several noteworthy trends. For instance, there’s been a surge in developers preferring the security of standard employment contracts over freelance or business-to-business (B2B) arrangements.

Interestingly, the shift in demand has resulted in decreased activity from minor US and UK VC-backed companies. At the same time, more prominent corporate brands find it easier to compete for talent in the current climate.

As the dust begins to settle, we’re also observing a normalisation of salaries for Java developers. This development is positive for the industry, fostering a more balanced and equitable job market.

As for the work arrangement, the once-popular 100% remote model gives way to a hybrid model. The latter allows for remote and office-based work, providing flexibility while maintaining team cohesion. This hybrid model will likely become the new norm regardless of personal preferences.

Conclusion

The tech hiring world is dynamic, subject to various external and internal factors. While we’ve seen a recent drop in demand, the market for Java developers in Poland remains vibrant and active. Feel free to reach out for more numbers and analysis around this or other tech stacks.
