The State of QA and Automated Testing in Poland: An In-Depth Look

July 28, 2023

Quality Assurance (QA) and automated and manual testing have taken centre stage in the tech recruitment domain. Having specialised in tech talent and recruitment in Poland, I have witnessed an interesting spectrum of trends, from businesses hiring a significant number of QA professionals to others departing entirely from dedicated QA roles. The Scrum framework, in fact, does not explicitly mention QA and Testers as separate roles. Instead, developers should arm themselves with the necessary skills to fulfil product goals, thereby owning all activities in the product development lifecycle.

Given these industry changes, we have embarked on a journey to understand QA better and testing in Poland. Here’s what we uncovered:

QA and Test Automation Talent Landscape in Poland

Let’s dissect the data from 11 QA and Test Automation titles in Software Engineering in Poland to discern some intriguing insights:

  • The talent pool consists of 13,900 professionals.
  • Over the past year, 3,139 professionals have changed jobs.
  • 695 new talents joined the pool, indicating a 5% increase.
  • There are 790 open positions, and 3,300 professionals are open for new opportunities.
  • The gender balance is 59% men to 41% women, similar to the Scrum Master role.
  • The average length of service in the role is 1.3 years.

Perhaps the most interesting question that arises is, where are these talents emerging from?

The Emergence of Talent – Universities and Migration

“Five out of the top ten universities producing this talent in Poland are from Belarus. Astonishingly, 75% of all new profiles in Poland are the result of migration.

The universities that are playing a vital role in delivering this talent include the AGH University of Kraków, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Belarusian State University, Gdańsk University of Technology, and the Silesian University of Technology.

Now, let’s peek into this talent pool’s geographical distribution and top employers. The largest concentration of QA professionals is in Warsaw, Wroclaw, and Krakow. However, if you’re hunting for talent, consider looking into Katowice, Poznan, and Lodz.

“The primary recruiters for this talent are EPAM Systems, Nokia, Sii Poland, GlobalLogic, and Luxoft, with Eviden, Luxoft Poland, Aplikacje Krytyczne, Shiji Group, and uTest showing the most growth.”

On the downside, companies like Netguru, Andersen Lab, iSoft, LG Energy Solution, and Huuuge Games have seen a decrease.

Skill Sets and Salaries

  5. Java (26%)
  6. Python (23%)
  7. Postman API (22%)

  10. Javascript (15%)

On the other hand, the fastest-growing skills are Cypress, REST APIs, TypeScript, QA Automation, Azure DevOps Services, Gitlab, API Testing, Swagger API, Postman API, and Docker.

“The salary aspect paints a quite fascinating picture. But let’s save that for another day or perhaps another blog post!”
