Exploring the Tech Hiring Landscape in Poland: A Deep Dive into the JavaScript Scene

July 20, 2023

Demand for software development talent, particularly JavaScript developers, is soaring. Many countries globally have seen an exponential increase in their need for such professionals. Often underlooked as a tech hub, Poland presents an intriguing case study. As demonstrated by our detailed analysis, the Central-European country is rapidly gaining a reputation as a hotbed of JavaScript expertise.

Unveiling the Numbers

One way to assess the state of the JavaScript tech scene in Poland is through numbers. We embarked on a data-driven journey to bring you an overview of the current situation in the country. Our trusted sources of information? LinkedIn and Ntiative Business Insights.

Our research revealed that 114,000 LinkedIn users in Poland list JavaScript as a skill. Once we narrowed our search to those with job titles like ‘software developer’ or ‘engineer’, we were still left with an impressive figure of 35,000 profiles.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the key data regarding the JavaScript landscape in Poland as of June 2023:

  • Total JavaScript developers/software engineers: 35,000
  • New profiles added in the past year: 4,200
  • Job changes in the last year: 7,644
  • Open roles: 830
  • Professionals open for new opportunities: 6,700
  • Gender breakdown: 85% male, 15% female
  • The average length of service: 1.5 years

Poland’s Tech Talent Hotspots

Three names rise when pinpointing Poland’s top cities for tech talent: Gdansk, Poznan, and Katowice. These bustling cities have proven to be the best for sourcing JavaScript talent.

Meanwhile, the academic sector also significantly contributes to Poland’s JavaScript talent pool. The following institutions lead in producing tech talent:

  1. AGH University of Science and Technology
  2. Wroclaw University of Science and Technology
  3. Warsaw University of Technology
  4. The Silesian University of Technology
  5. Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics

The Belarusian Factor

The inclusion of a Belarusian university on the list might come as a surprise. However, it’s an outcome of a unique phenomenon occurring in the region.

Many US and UK companies have relocated their development teams from Belarus to Poland due to the conflict in the region and the Business Harbour visa offered by the Polish government as a solution to attract highly skilled professionals. We estimate that over the past year, one-third of all new developers in Poland were recruited from other countries, with Belarus contributing around 70% to this number.

Migration Patterns

Analysing where these tech professionals are migrating from offers another layer of understanding. Belarus, Ukraine, and India are the top countries feeding the Polish JavaScript scene. On the other hand, the primary destinations for those leaving Poland are the USA, UK, and Canada.

The Company Landscape

The presence of major tech firms marks the Polish JavaScript scene, each experiencing varying degrees of growth and decline. Among the top companies by talent pool size, Epam Systems, Capgemini, Sii Poland, Godel Technologies, and Google stand out.

However, not all firms are thriving. Some, like iTechArt Group, IBA Group, Netguru, Credit Suisse, and Grand Parade, have seen a decrease in their talent pool over the past year.

Crucial Skills Among Polish JavaScript Developers

Polish JavaScript developers boast a diverse skill set. The ten most common skills include React.js, jQuery, TypeScript, Node.js, Angular, Redux.js, AngularJS, Vue.js, Express.js, and Next.js.

The fast-growing skills among this talent group are equally diverse, with Next.js, Jest, TypeScript, RxJS, React Native, Vue.js, React.js, Express.js, Redux.js, Angular, and Node.js showing significant growth.
